New Collaborative Minor Launches 2/28/08 at 2:01:35 PM
—Stephanie Lawrence, Academic Adviser Department of African American & African Studies
Planning has begun for next year’s 40th anniversary gala commemorating the student activism in 1969 that served as the genesis of the African American and African Studies department. Students, faculty, staff, and community members will all be involved in creating the events that will mark this milestone.
This spring, the department also welcomed a new staff member, Scott Redd, who is outreach coordinator for the department. Scott is working with community partners to more closely connect the African-American and African communities in the Twin Cities to the department and the University. One goal is to establish collaborations with area high schools to contribute to increased enrollment of underrepresented populations.
Many of you may have recently seen an announcement of a new minor on the AAN listserv. The department is excited to be the administrative home of the newly launched interdepartmental minor in Comparative U.S. Race and Ethnicity. The minor is a collaboration of the departments of African-American & African Studies, American Indian Studies and Chicano Studies, and the program in Asian American Studies. Several students have already declared or expressed interest in the minor. We expect the minor to appeal to a wide range of students interested in examining multiple perspectives on the challenges facing historically underrepresented communities in the United States. More information about the minor can be found on the minor website: www.comprace.umn.edu .
Interested students can contact the adviser in African-American & African Studies at comprace@umn.edu for information and to declare. Advisers with questions are also welcome to contact me, of course.
One final note for advisers seeing AA & AS majors—spring degree candidates have been reviewed and major programs have been updated on APAS (or updated major programs have been sent to students’ CLA student communities in those cases where APAS does not read the correct major code). If you have any questions about a student’s status, though, please feel free to contact me.
