Career Programming: What's the Best Way to Advertise?
3/30/06 at 3:15:58 PM

— Debbie Peters, Academic Adviser

Spring semester equals career panels for the staff in Communications and Media (CommMed). In collaboration with the Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC) and the School of Journalism, we put together two outstanding industry panels geared toward careers in journalism (newspaper, magazine, and broadcast) and strategic communication (advertising and public relations).

We kicked the week off with the journalism panel where students listened first hand to the experiences of Ken Stone, SJMC instructor and former "NewsNight Minnesota" anchor; Paula Engelking, special projects producer for WCCO news; Brian Bakst, Associated Press reporter with the state capitol bureau; Megan Wiley, online editor for Mpls/StPaul magazine and Nicole Garrison-Sprenger, reporter for the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. These accomplished individuals shared their experiences on finding their first job, the importance of networking, and the value of internship experiences.

The student turnout was successful, but it did prompt conversation on how to better reach students in an already over-saturated society. We hear frequently from students wanting information on how to find internships, how to search for jobs, how to gain relative experience and so on. Yet, when we develop these programs, students do not take advantage of the opportunity.

Are we using the wrong words to describe the event? Should we advertise earlier or in more places? These are the questions we need to answer so we can better serve the students in our community. The next step we want to pursue is to involve corresponding student groups such as: Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Ad Club, Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), PRISM (a multicultural student organization), and the Communications Student Association (CSA) to help disseminate our message to interested students.

We are holding a second industry panel geared toward advertising and public relations today with guest panelists from advertising firm Campbell Mithun, marketing communications firm Carmichael Lynch Spong, the president of the James J. Hill Reference Library, and the executive vice president/group creative director from Risdall Advertising Agency. We hope to gather information from the students who attend on how to better reach them for future programming.
