Major & Minor in Collaborative Arts
4/19/07 at 6:31:10 PM

—Sue Hunter-Weir, Community Coordinator
Arts Student Community

What happens when great minds get together to think about and make great art? We’re about to find out in a big way. A new major and minor in collaborative arts are in the planning stages and likely to be forwarded to the appropriate committees for their approval sometime in early Fall.

The major (and/or department) is titled the Interdisciplinary Program in Collaborative Arts (that’s pronounced IP-CUH). And the courses most likely will be listed in the class schedule under COLA (no pronunciation help necessary with that one, but note how cleverly/creatively CLA, or should we say CoLA, is emphasized in that designator).

The course review committee has approved four new courses to be taught this Fall. They are 3xxx-level, and promise to be very exciting. One of the courses will be taught by Guerino Mazzola, who has a Ph.D. in mathematics and 19 jazz CDs on his vitae. Ali Momeni has a Ph.D. in music composition from UC-Berkeley. His dissertation was titled: “Composing Instruments: Inventing and Performing with Generative Computer-based Instruments,” and he thinks it worth noting that he shares a birthday with Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee. Michael Sommers is well known to those in the arts world as a puppeteer and the guiding light behind last year’s on-campus production of Master and Margarita. The fourth course will be team taught by the 11 founding members of the Center for Creative Research, whose mission is to create strategies that facilitate greater interaction between artists and the University community. Their course will cover a range of ideas and activities—from dance to architecture and beyond. Watch for an announcement when the courses are added to the on-line class schedule.

If you want to get a really good sense about some of the ideas that students will be introduced to in these new courses, go on-line and search by the instructors’ names (for the Center, search for Dana Whitco). Prepare to be dazzled!
