Careers in Translating and Interpreting
10/29/09 at 4:03:46 PM

—Rachel Drake, Academic Adviser
Languages & Mathematics Student Community

Katy Korchik organized a successful panel discussion for students interested in careers in translation and interpreting. She believed that there would be strong interest in this from our students in language-related majors.

She invited someone from the Program in Translation and Interpreting, a faculty member with experience in literary translation, and a representative from a local agency which provides interpreting services. A representative from the Career and Community Learning Center was also on hand.

The panelists provided concrete, useful information about career options in these areas, including the dispiriting news that there really aren't good career opportunities in literary translation. Over 60 students attended, and a number of others have followed up with advisers requesting more information. We are all pleased with the turnout, and Katy plans to offer the program again in the future.
