The Career and Community Learning Center is housed in two offices. It’s 135 Johnston Hall office is the CLA Career Services office, dedicated to helping CLA students explore majors, careers, grad schools, and job-search skills. (It’s also the pre-law advising office for all UMTC students.) CCLC’s 345 Fraser office offers programming to all UMTC students in the areas listed below.

Advisors are an integral part of informing students about CCLC services. As beneficial as these services are, many students don’t know about them until an advisor points them out. Thanks in advance for doing so.

Programs and resources through CCLC’s 345 Fraser Hall office:

  • Community Engagement Scholars Program: Launched in 2005, this program allows students to receive official U recognition for public service. Students who sign up must fulfill service-learning requirements and projects to graduate with special honors.
  • Info and advice about volunteering in the Twin Cities: Through personalized advising, CCLC helps students find public service opportunities that are a good match for their interests and goals.
  • Service-learning classes: CCLC cultivates partnerships with faculty and nonprofits to develop a diverse array of courses, then helps plug in students.
  • Trainings and presentations for students involved in community work or service-learning
  • National Student Exchange (NSE): The NSE program gives students the chance to study at another campus in the U.S. or Canada for a semester or a year, while paying in-state tuition. CCLC administers NSE for U of M students.
  • HECUA: These semester-long programs (16 credits) allow students to focus on social justice issues while studying off-campus in the Twin Cities. HECUA’s three local programs are Environmental Sustainability, City Arts, and Metro Urban Studies Term.

CCLC’s office in 135 Johnston Hall is the CLA Career Services office. Resources and programs available there include:

  • Individual career counseling appointments
  • A Resource Room where students can explore majors and careers. Students can browse on their own or get individual assistance. The Resource Room is filled with books, magazines, and handouts, as well as CCLC’s extensive “What Can I Do With a Major in ___?” collection. These binders offer in-depth info for every single major in CLA.
  • 2-credit Career Courses: Career Exploration (ID 1201, aimed at freshmen and sophomores) and Career Planning (ID 3201, aimed at juniors and seniors)
  • Free workshops, including Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Effective Interviewing, How to Apply to Law School, Job-Search Strategies, and more
  • Many events, including: Graduate and Professional School Day, Community Involvement Fair, Job Search Jump Start, Exploring Interests and Majors, and many others.
  • On-Campus Recruiting opportunities and events for CLA students
  • Interest and personality style assessments, to help students decide about majors and potential careers
  • Personalized resume and cover letter critiques, available without appointment in the CCLC Resource Room.
  • Mock (practice) interviews, which are recorded and assessed by professional staff. These are free and by appointment only.
  • The CLA Undergraduate Internship Grant, which funds CLA students doing unpaid internships
  • The CLA Mentor Program, which connects students to working professionals over the span of a school year
  • Guidance using GoldPASS, the U’s online database filled with job, internships and volunteer listings. The system was created specifically for U of M students and recent alumni.
  • Recommendation Letters File (for students applying to grad/professional school)
  • Graduate/professional school help, including information on entrance exams and personal statements
  • Pre-law advising, available to all students on the Twin Cities campus.
  • Outreach presentations in partnership with CLA student communities, departments, and student groups. Contact us if you would like us to present to any group of CLA students.

To learn more about any of these programs, events and services, please see www.cclc.umn.edu/ or feel free to visit or contact the CCLC offices.
