Description In May 1991, the Twin Cities Campus Assembly approved the final report of the Task Force on Liberal Education for the Twin Cities Campus. This report outlined a new set of liberal education requirements for baccalaureate degrees offered by any of the colleges on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UMTC) campus. Four aspects of the UMTC requirements represent significant innovations for the campus:
- Baccalaureate liberal education requirements are now campus wide, which eases students’ academic exploration.
- Courses are included from all instructional units on campus, including professional programs.
- A campus wide Council on Liberal Education (CLE), formed in January 1992, is charged with implementing and administering the requirements.
- The UMTC liberal education requirements are consistent with the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, a statewide definition of general education intended to ease students’ transfer of credit among all public higher education institutions in Minnesota: all four campuses of the University, the state universities, the community colleges, and the technical colleges.
Note: Beginning fall 1999, any student who has been away from the University for more than one year without a Leave of Absence form on file, or for two years with an approved Leave of Absence, will be placed under the current liberal education requirements. Contact Laurel Carroll, l-carr@umn.edu, regarding exceptions.
Current liberal education requirements
Exemptions from the liberal education requirements:
- Students with a previous Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college are exempt from the diversified core, designated themes, and writing requirements.
- Students with a previous Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited college are exempt from the diversified core, designated themes, writing, and second language requirements.
- Students with an associate in arts degree from a Minnesota Community College are exempt from the diversified core and freshman composition requirements. (Four-year colleges that grant a 2-year A.A. degree do not qualify for this exemption.)
- Students who have completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum before entering CLA are exempt from the diversified core, designated themes, and freshman composition requirements.
All students are eligible for a one-credit waiver in the core and theme requirements. E-mail Lynn Jordan in the Office of the Registrar at l-dyks@tc.umn.edu to have this reflected on the APAS.
