Description
Up until fall 1986, the College of Liberal Arts offered an Associate in Liberal Arts Degree. The ALA was conferred upon completion of two years of work in CLA. Requirements of completion were:
- 90 quarter credits acceptable to CLA;
- at least 45 CLA quarter credits completed on A-N grading;
- the CLA English composition requirement;
- one year of second language and three of the four general education groups or the four general education groups (see Chambers requirements)
If the student met the requirements and applied for the degree, it was awarded, even if the student planned to continue work in CLA or in a professional school.
After fall 1986, the only conditions under which a student might have a case to petition the college to grant them an ALA would be:
- they had completed all the ALA requirements before 1986, and indicated intentions to apply for the ALA;
- they have a very compelling argument for needing an ALA now;
- the student has no plan to complete a BA degree anytime in the future.
Any granting of the ALA now would need approval from the Office of the Assistant Dean, 106 Johnston, so questions from students who persist in believing it is their due should go to coordinators.
