Description
The degree audit - or Academic Progress Audit Report (commonly known as the “APAS” report) – is available to students 24 hours a day online. The information listed on the report includes a record of all coursework taken, including transfer coursework; credit totals; Liberal Education requirements; Writing requirement; College requirements (second language in CLA, for instance); and major and minor requirements, if the student has declared.

Much of the coursework listed on the APAS registers automatically in the correct categories based on the coding and processing done by the Admissions Office. However, advisers must be aware that not all coding of coursework into the APAS is done by the Admissions office. CLA Advising offices are responsible for coding student coursework for placement into the following categories, especially for transfer students:

  1. Second Language coursework
  1. Some upper division coursework
  1. Major coursework
  1. Upper division inside the major coursework
  1. Eliminated credit for a course (or a “NOCL”), based either on the course having been repeated or on an excess of credits in a given category (Physical Education/Study Skills/Applied Music, for example).

Additionally, advisers need to be aware of coursework from previous institutions that could count for Liberal Education requirements, major requirements, or upper division requirements outside the major, and advise students appropriately about the petition processes for each of these categories.

Making Corrections to the APAS
The APAS report is being relied upon increasingly (by both students and advisers) for accurately assessing a student’s closeness to graduation. Advising offices must review students’ APAS reports for accuracy and make changes when necessary.

If you have a question about making exceptions in APAS, please contact your CLA community coordinator. After April 13, 2005, please contact Carly Andersen, APAS Specialist, at candersen@class.cla.umn.edu or 4-8472.
