Description
This section describes the circumstances under which students go on academic suspension, the procedures for reviewing academic suspension status, and the policy in place before fall 1999.
Policy Statement
Students who have been placed on probation (PB) and whose term GPA and cumulative GPA both subsequently fall below 2.0 are suspended from the college. Academic suspension lasts for one year after which time the student may apply for readmissions.
Procedures
Once the semester grades are posted, the CLA Student Information Office (SIO) generates academic reports for students who, because of GPA or previous academic status, warrant probation review, contract review, suspension or second suspension/dismissal review.
All communities review the academic reports to determine students’ status. Students’ files are marked on the inside flap with the appropriate code:
- off probation (OP)
- placed on probation (POP)
- continued on probation (COP)
- continued on contract (COP-II)
- suspended (SSP)
- second suspension (2nd SSP) (Formerly Dismissal—DMSL)
Only students already placed on probation and whose cumulative and term GPA are both below 2.0 will be suspended.
After reviewing a student’s file, the community marks it with the action to be taken and places the hold on the student record in PeopleSoft. The final action list is compiled and sent to the Student Information Office in 49 Johnston. Suspended students receive a letter from Student Information Office (49 Johnston) indicating to them that they have been suspended.
Once a suspension letter is sent, students have approximately two weeks to appeal. The appeal of this action must be in writing and must be accompanied with any supporting documents (for example e.g., a supplemental grade report from an instructor correcting an inaccurately reported grade). Each community reviews their students’ appeals and sends a list of approved appeals to Student Information Office (49 Johnston); these students’ names are removed from the suspension (P3) list.
A suspended student’s record receives a suspension (P3) hold in PeopleSoft and “action reason” under student program/plan in PeopleSoft will read SUSP. The college’s Student Information Office (49 Johnston) automatically cancels his or her registration in PeopleSoft at the end of the drop/add deadline of the next term. Suspension lasts for one year. Once this year is finished a student may meet with an adviser and to determine the possibility of readmissions.
