Description
This section describes the circumstances under which students go on second suspension and the procedures for reviewing second suspension status.

Policy Statement
A student who has been readmitted to the University from academic suspension and fails to meet the terms of the academic contract will be given a second suspension (P3), which is considered the final suspension from the University of Minnesota. This action was formerly called dismissal. The office that determines if a student suspended a second time will be allowed to reapply and register for future classes has yet to be decided.

(Please see a CLA community coordinator for the latest update and second suspension policy)

Procedures
Once the semester grades are posted, the CLA Student Information Office (SIO) generates academic reports for students who are under academic probation contract (PC). Students under academic contract are reviewed carefully.

After reviewing a student’s file, the community marks it with the action to be taken, and either removes, changes, or keeps the hold on the student record in PeopleSoft. The final action list is compiled and sent to the Student Information Office (49 Johnston).

Students who are suspended for a second time (formerly termed dismissed) receive a letter from the Student Information Office (49 Johnston) informing them of their new status.

Once a second suspension letter is sent, students have approximately one to two weeks to appeal. The appeal of this action must be in writing and must be accompanied with any supporting documents. In the case of a second suspension, appeals will be under extremely strict scrutiny. Each community reviews their students’ appeals and sends a list of approved appeals to Student Information Office (49 Johnston); these students’ names are removed from the second suspension list.

Students suspended a second time receive a suspension (P3) hold on their PeopleSoft record. Students who are registered for classes have their registration automatically cancelled by the Student Information Office (49 Johnston) in PeopleSoft at the end of the drop/add deadline of the next term. The Student Information Office changes program/plan in PeopleSoft to discontinued student and starting fall 2001, places a SUS2 (previously DACT) under action reason of program/plan in PeopleSoft.

It has not yet been decided whom or what office the students will see if they want to come back after a second suspension. Please see a CLA community coordinator for latest update and policy for second suspension.

* All contracts include the requirement that each course in the contract term be completed with a grade of [C-] or higher, or S (successful grades), and that there be no grades of [D+] or lower, N, or Incomplete (unsuccessful grades). The contract may also include other “special” terms at the discretion of the adviser.

** In most cases, the action will be ‘suspend.’ There are some cases, depending on the nature of the “special terms” and the severity of the infraction (not meeting the special terms), where a second contract semester may be warranted.

† A student who has been readmitted to the University from academic suspension and fails to meet the terms of the academic contract will be dismissed from the University. Readmission will only be possible through reapplying to the University. A student will receive a P3 hold and starting Fall 2001 “action reason” under student program/plan in PeopleSoft will read SUS2.

P2 = Probation Level-Two (Now PC, Academic Contract)
